Word Counter — Everything You Need to Know

Our word counter goes far beyond simply counting words. Here's what every metric means and how to use it to improve your writing.

Words vs Characters — What's the Difference?

Words are groups of letters separated by spaces. Characters are every individual letter, number, space, and punctuation mark. Character count (with spaces) counts every keystroke. Character count (without spaces) counts only letters, numbers and punctuation — this is the metric used by some academic institutions and legal documents. Most social media platforms enforce character limits, not word limits — which is why our counter shows both.

Reading Time — How Is It Calculated?

Reading time is calculated at 238 words per minute — the most widely cited average adult reading speed for non-fiction content, based on research published in Psychological Science. Fiction is typically read faster (260 WPM). Technical content is read slower (180-200 WPM). Our estimate gives you a reliable baseline for blog posts, articles, and web content.

Speaking Time — For Presentations, Podcasts & Speeches

Speaking time uses an average of 130 words per minute — the standard pace for clear, measured public speaking. Fast speakers typically deliver 150-180 WPM. Conversational podcast hosts average 160-180 WPM. For formal speeches and presentations, 130 WPM is the right benchmark — it accounts for pauses, emphasis, and audience comprehension time.

AI Token Counter — Why It Matters

AI language models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini process text in "tokens" rather than words or characters. A token is approximately 4 characters or 0.75 words in English. Knowing your token count matters when: working within context window limits, estimating API costs (most AI APIs charge per token), crafting prompts for AI tools, and understanding why an AI might truncate long inputs. Our estimate uses the OpenAI average of ~0.75 tokens per word, which applies reasonably well to Claude and most other models.

Keyword Density — What's Healthy for SEO?

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword appears relative to total word count. The word frequency table shows your top 10 most-used words with density percentages. For SEO: 1-2% density for your primary keyword is ideal. Above 3% risks being flagged as keyword stuffing by Google's algorithms. Use the frequency table to identify words you're using too often or key terms that are missing from your content.

Why Does Word Count Matter for SEO?

Word count is a proxy for content comprehensiveness — and Google rewards comprehensive content. Pages that cover a topic thoroughly tend to rank higher because they satisfy more searcher intent and attract more backlinks. However, quality matters more than quantity. A focused 1,500-word article that answers a question completely will outrank a padded 3,000-word article that repeats itself. Use the benchmarks table above for target lengths by content type.

How many words per minute is average reading speed?
The average adult reading speed is 238 words per minute for non-fiction. Fiction is typically read at 260 WPM. Technical content is read at 180-200 WPM. Our word counter uses 238 WPM for reading time estimates. Speaking time uses 130 WPM — the standard for clear, measured public speaking.
What is the Twitter character limit?
Twitter/X allows 280 characters per tweet for standard accounts. Twitter Premium (Blue) subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters. Our word counter shows your character count against the 280 character limit with a live progress bar. When you go over, the bar turns red.
How many words is a 5 minute speech?
A 5-minute speech is approximately 650-750 words at a comfortable speaking pace of 130-150 WPM. A fast speaker (180 WPM) would need around 900 words. Our word counter shows your speaking time estimate automatically — look for the "Speaking time" stat in the panel on the right.
What is a good word count for a blog post?
For SEO in 2026: 1,500-2,500 words for standard competitive keywords. 2,500-5,000 words for informational guides and pillar content. 500-800 words for news and low-competition topics. Longer content tends to rank better because it's more comprehensive — but quality and relevance matter more than raw length.
How do I calculate keyword density?
Keyword density = (number of times keyword appears ÷ total word count) × 100. The word frequency table on the right shows your top 10 most-used words with density percentages automatically. Aim for 1-2% for your primary keyword. Above 3% risks keyword stuffing penalties from Google.
What are AI tokens and how do I count them?
AI tokens are the units that language models like ChatGPT and Claude use to process text. One token is approximately 4 characters or 0.75 English words. Knowing your token count helps you stay within context window limits and estimate API costs. Our word counter estimates tokens at 0.75 per word — this is the OpenAI average and applies reasonably well to most models.
How many words are in a page?
A standard A4 or Letter page with 12pt Times New Roman, double-spaced contains approximately 250-275 words. Single-spaced: 500-550 words. Our word counter estimates page count based on 275 words per double-spaced page — the standard used by most academic institutions.
